Widespread damage was caused by the June 2022 earthquake in Afghanistan, particularly in the provinces of Khost and Paktika. People in Centre and UNDP collaborated to depute Vivek Rawal as housing adviser for instituting the owner-driven reconstruction programme. In four villages — Kala in Spera district (Khost), Alamshir Khail and Gafoor Khail in Barmal district (Paktika), and Noorma Khan in Giyan district (Paktika) — more than 150 house owners were facilitated to construct their own houses using local materials and artisans. People in Centre is also building the capacities of UNDP partners — CARE, ActionAid and the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan — to provide on-site technical advice and training to house owners and artisans.
