After a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Eastern Afghanistan on 31 August 2025, killing more than 2,200 people and destroying more than 8,000 houses and other infrastructure, a joint rapid recovery needs assessment was conducted by UN agencies, the World Bank, ADB and the EU. The housing sector damage and needs assessment was led by Vivek Rawal of People in Centre on behalf of UNDP, with support from UN-Habitat and IOM. Estimating damage and loss of US$ 41 million, the recovery needs were estimated at around US$ 55 million. The report is available for download here.
