Emergency Makeshift Shelters for Returning Families affected by Ethnic Violence in Kokrajhar, Assam

At invitation of the District Administration, Kokrajhar, Assam, At the invitation of the District Administration of Kokrajhar, Assam, People in Centre provided support — in collaboration with UNNATI, Hunnarshala and TISS — for instituting a programme of makeshift emergency shelters for families returning after the ethnic violence in Kokrajhar. Vivek Rawal and Teja Malladi of People in Centre, with Mahavir Acharya of Hunnarshala, developed design and implementation guidelines for community-based emergency shelter arrangements that the District Administration could deliver immediately to returning families. The District Administration supported an owner-driven process by providing a kit of bamboo and HDPE sheets, through which more than 1,200 families built their immediate emergency shelters.
