Assessing Damage and Recovery Needs in Bhutan after Sikkim Earthquake

Led the joint rapid assessment mission to assess damage and recovery needs in Bhutan after the September 2011 Sikkim earthquake.

The Sikkim earthquake of September 18, 2011 affected India, Nepal and Bhutan, causing significant losses. At the request of the Royal Government of Bhutan to the UN, Vivek Rawal of People in Centre led the Joint Rapid Assessment mission of the RGoB, the UN and the World Bank to assess the damage, losses and recovery needs. An inter-disciplinary team including UNDP-BCPR, UNOCHA, UNDP Bhutan, the World Bank and various ministries and departments of the Government of Bhutan undertook the assessment in the first two weeks of October 2011.
