As part of the ‘urban poverty reduction strategy in Ahmedabad’ project for MHT, Rushank Mehta was involved in documenting poor settlements in Ahmedabad city and developing housing design solutions. The initial study — the inception report — analysed the living conditions of the poor (with regard to housing and livelihood) and the effect of urban development and infrastructure projects on the poor. The report provided information on the housing and livelihood needs of the poor, and the extent of displacement caused by urban development projects in some areas of Ahmedabad city. It provided insight for developing pro-poor strategies for urban poverty reduction that may be implemented through the various urban development projects under the JNNURM.
