Developing alternatives for existing marketplaces in Ahmedabad

Collaborated with SEWA to redevelop existing marketplaces in Ahmedabad as livelihood-generation spaces that accommodate street vendors.

Period2008

People in Centre has long been engaged with issues of marketplaces and street vending in Ahmedabad, focusing on existing marketplaces in both the old and expanded city limits. Because these require a different strategy to be supported as livelihood-generation spaces for the poor, People in Centre — after working on the Manek Chowk and Teen Darwaja markets — collaborated with SEWA on other marketplaces, including the redevelopment of markets near Danapith (Rajnagar), the State Transport (ST) bus-stand area and the Jamalpur vending markets, accommodating existing street sellers. The basic plans can be viewed here.
