Street vending and the legal right to carry on business in open markets can only be supported through legal recognition and the incorporation of vending in the planning process. People in Centre supported SEWA in its case for the implementation of the Street Vending Policy in Ahmedabad. A presentation was made to Gujarat High Court judges explaining the case from the viewpoint of supporting the livelihoods of the poor and showcasing such open markets as unique cultural assets of the country. People in Centre also briefed SEWA’s legal advisor, Ms. Indira Jaising, on town planning schemes and the design development of marketplaces during the proceedings of the legal petition.
