It was observed that small marketplace level interventions find lot of hurdle since the town planning schemes do not provide the possibility of development and growth of open/ informal marketplaces. To see possibility of accommodating marketplaces in town-planning schemes, a newly developing area of Ghodasar TPS was taken up for the study. The study was carried out by Shweta Tripathy, a trainee from TISS with SEWA and guided by Rushank Mehta. It was found that despite the availability of open plots and presence of street vendors in the vicinity, the need for such open market was not recognised in the planning process. Hence, no provision was kept for open markets, leaving the street vendors illegally occupying the streets and becoming hurdle to the city. This study indicated a strong need for incorporation of open marketplaces in the planning stages of TPS.
