Rushank Mehta from People in Centre was invited to write a paper in themed issue of the Journal ‘Built Environment’ on ‘Marketplaces as an Urban Development Strategy’. Focusing on the themes of ‘marketplaces and community’ as well as ‘marketplaces and design’, the paper analysed the interrelations between different occupant groups of the market and complex interactions which are critical for livelihood generation and smooth functioning of the market. We proposed a schematic design accommodating all the activities and the occupant groups of the natural market. This design also demonstrated that inclusive planning supporting the existing interrelations within a natural market is possible as opposed to the common solution of removing natural markets. The paper, co-authored with Chintan Gohil can be viewed here.
